ABSTRACT: The use of resistant wheat cultivars is a fundamental strategy to minimize the damages caused by blast, a disease caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT). The objetive of this stydy was to (a) evaluate the reaction to blast of Brazilian wheat cultivars and (b) determine whether there is correlation between severity of symptoms on wheat spikes and “sporulation rate of PoT conidia per gram of wheat spike rachis” (Rscon). Plants of 16 wheat cultivars were grown in greenhouse until flowering (Zadoks stage 65), when their spikes were inoculated with a suspension formed by mixing the conidia of three PoT isolates. The evaluated variables were blast severity on spikes at 5, 7 and 11 days after inoculation (dai) and Rscon. Rachis were evaluated individually to determine the Rscon. Correlation analyzes were carried out between blast severity means on spikes of cultivars at 5, 7 and 11 dai and Rscon. The cultivars TBIO Mestre, TBIO Aton, ORS 1401, ORS 1403, ORS Destak, ORS Feroz, and CD 116 stood out for being classified in the statistical groups with the highest resistance to blast for the four variables considered in the study. The correlation between blast severity on spikes at 5, 7 and 11 dai and Rscon is at most moderate.

RESUMO: A utilização de cultivares de trigo resistentes é estratégia fundamental para minimizar danos causados pela brusone, doença causada pelo fungo Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT). O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar (a) a reação à brusone de cultivares brasileiras de trigo e (b) verificar a correlação entre a severidade dos sintomas na espiga e a “taxa de esporulação de conídios de PoT por g de ráquis de espigas de trigo” (Txcon). Plantas de 16 cultivares de trigo foram conduzidas em casa-de-vegetação até o florescimento (estádio 65 da escala de Zadoks), quando as espigas das mesmas foram submetidas à inoculação com uma suspensão formada pela mistura de conídios de três isolados de PoT. As variáveis avaliadas foram a severidade de brusone nas espigas aos cinco, sete e 11 dias após a inoculação (dai) e a Txcon. A Txcon foi determinada de forma individualizada para os ráquis. Foram realizadas análises de correlação entre as médias de severidade de brusone nas espigas das cultivares aos cinco, sete e 11 dai e a Txcon. As cultivares TBIO Mestre, TBIO Aton, ORS 1401, ORS 1403, ORS Destak, ORS Feroz e CD 116 se destacaram por terem sido classificadas nos grupos estatísticos de maior resistência à brusone para as quatro variáveis consideradas no estudo. A correlação entre a severidade de brusone nas espigas aos cinco, sete e 11 dai e Txcon é, no máximo, moderada.

Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT) is known to survive in wheat seeds and this condition favors its spread. There are, however, many gaps in knowledge regarding the damage caused by this pathogen in relation to the establishment and sanity of wheat seedlings. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between incidence of PoT in wheat seeds and variables associated with the establishment and the sanity of the produced seedlings. Seven samples of wheat seeds naturally infected with the pathogen were used. The incidence of PoT in each of the seed samples was determined via the Blotter test, indicating a variation from 0 to 80.5%. The seeds of each sample were sown in 500 mL plastic pots containing autoclaved sand and the seedlings produced were evaluated in relation to the following aspects; emergency, height, lesions in different segments, mortality, abnormalities and transmissibility of symptoms. The study demonstrated that there is a correlation between incidence of PoT in wheat seeds and the following variables related to the seedlings produced; height at 7 days after sowing (DAS), incidence and severity of symptoms at 7, 14 and 21 DAS, and mortality at 14 and 21 DAS. The results confirmed that the establishment and sanity of wheat seedlings directly depend on incidence of PoT in the seeds.

Sabe-se que Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT) sobrevive nas sementes de trigo e esta condição favorece sua disseminação. Há, porém, muitas lacunas no conhecimento relativo aos danos causados por este patógeno em relação ao estabelecimento e à sanidade das plântulas de trigo. O objetivo do trabalho foi verificar se existe correlação entre incidência de PoT em sementes de trigo e variáveis associadas ao estabelecimento e à sanidade das plântulas geradas. Foram utilizadas sete amostras de sementes de trigo naturalmente infectadas com o patógeno. A incidência de PoT em cada uma das amostras de sementes foi determinada via Blotter test indicando variação de 0 a 80,5%. As sementes de cada amostra foram semeadas em copos plásticos de 500 mL contendo areia autoclavada e as plântulas produzidas foram avaliadas em relação aos seguintes aspectos; emergência, altura, lesões em diferentes segmentos, mortalidade, anormalidades e transmissibilidade de sintomas. O estudo demonstrou que existe correlação entre a incidência de PoT em sementes de trigo e as seguintes variáveis relativas às plântulas produzidas; altura aos 7 dias após a semeadura (DAS), incidência e severidade de sintomas aos 7, 14 e 21 DAS, e mortalidade aos 14 e 21 DAS. Os resultados confirmaram que o estabelecimento e a sanidade das plântulas de trigo dependem diretamente da incidência de PoT nas sementes.

RESUMO: Neste estudo Pyricularia spp., P. oryzae e o patótipo Triticum (PoT) de P. oryzae foram detectados e identificados em segmentos foliares de forrageiras e gramíneas invasoras de lavouras de trigo. Em 2018 e 2019, foram coletadas 66 amostras de segmentos foliares lesionados de Urochloa e outras gramíneas em Londrina (PR), Patos de Minas (MG) e Uberaba (MG). A detecção e/ou identificação dos patógenos nas amostras foi realizada por meio de procedimentos de câmara úmida e com os iniciadores MoT3 e Pot2 por PCR. Houve amplificações de DNA com o primer MoT3 (específico para PoT) em 13 (19,69%) das amostras, todas provenientes da Urochloa. O resultado de que Urochloa hospeda PoT em uma taxa relativamente alta levanta preocupações sobre a importância que essas plantas podem ter no ciclo de brusone do trigo como hospedeiro intermediário para o patógeno e / ou fonte de inóculo para a doença.

ABSTRACT: In this study Pyricularia spp., P. oryzae and the P. oryzae pathotype Triticum (PoT) were detected and identified in leaf segments of forage and invasive grasses located in or next to wheat fields. In 2018 and 2019, 66 samples of lesion leaf segments of Urochloa and other grasses were collected in Londrina (PR), Patos de Minas (MG), and Uberaba (MG). The detection and/or identification of the pathogens on the samples was conducted using moist chamber procedures and with the primers MoT3 and Pot2 by PCR. There were DNA amplification with the primer MoT3 (specific for PoT) for 13 (19.69%) of the samples, all of them from Urochloa. The finding that Urochloa hosts PoT at a relatively high rate raises concerns about the importance which these plants may have on the wheat blast cycle as an alternative host for the pathogen and/or source of inoculum for the disease.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the presence of 2NVS translocation on the inheritance of wheat resistance to head blast, in F2 segregating lines from two biparental crosses. The IPF 86766 and 'Santa Fe' genotypes were used as female parents (both 2NVS carriers), and 'BRS 404', as the common male parent (non 2NVS carrier). Using a mixture of three isolates of Pyricularia oryzae Triticum, wheat spikes and rachises were evaluated for bleaching severity at five (%BS_5dpi) and seven days post-inoculation (%BS_7dpi), as well as for the number of infection points (IPR) and pathogen sporulation (SPO). Chi-square analyses showed that segregation follows a 3:1 Mendelian hypothesis, with a major locus with a dominant allele: %BS_7dpi for IPF 86766 × 'BRS 404' and IPR for 'Santa Fe' x 'BRS 404'. Therefore, this is the first known study to show that the 2NVS translocation responsible for resistance to head blast is a major locus with a dominant allele. In a controlled environment, 'BRS 404' shows bleaching severity and SPO similar with those occurring on IPF 86766 and 'Santa Fe'.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da presença da translocação 2NVS sobre a herança da resistência de trigo à brusone, em linhagens segregantes F2 de dois cruzamentos biparentais. Os genótipos IPF 86766 e 'Santa Fe' foram usados como genitores femininos (ambos portadores d a 2NVS), e 'BRS 404', como genitor masculino comum (não por tador da 2NVS ). A partir da mistura de três isolados de Pyricularia oryzae Triticum, espigas e ráquis de trigo foram avaliadas quanto à severidade de branqueamento aos cinco (%BS_5dpi) e aos 7 dias após inoculação (%BS_7dpi), bem como quanto ao número de pontos de infecção (IPR) e à esporulação do patógeno (SPO). Análises de qui-quadrado mostraram que a segregação segue a hipótese mendeliana 3:1, com um loco de efeito maior, com alelo dominante: %BS_7dpi para IPF 86766 × 'BRS 404' e IPR para 'Santa Fe' × 'BRS 404'. Portanto, este é o primeiro estudo conhecido a mostrar que a translocação 2NVS responsável pela resistência à brusone de trigo é um loco principal com um alelo dominante. Em condições controladas de ambiente, 'BRS 404' apresenta severidade de branqueamento e SPO similares às que ocorrem em IPF 86766 e 'Santa Fe'.

RESUMO: O primeiro relato da brusone do trigo no mundo foi no Brasil, em 1986. Desde então, tem-se realizado um esforço muito grande com vistas ao desenvolvimento de cultivares de trigo resistentes a esta doença, a qual é causada pelo fungo Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT). O objetivo deste trabalho foi de (i) avaliar a resistência de genótipos de trigo à brusone e (ii) verificar a correlação entre severidade da doença em espigas e taxa de esporulação de PoT em ráquis de espigas. Plantas de 40 cultivares brasileiras de trigo crescidas em vasos, no estádio de florescimento (estádio 65 da escala de Zadoks), foram submetidas à inoculação com uma suspensão de conídios de um isolado de PoT representativo da principal variante do fungo encontrada no Brasil. A severidade de brusone nas espigas aos cinco e sete dias após a inoculação (dai) e a taxa de esporulação do fungo nas ráquis (conídios por g de ráquis) foram avaliadas. Oitenta por cento das cultivares que foram classificadas no grupo com menor taxa de esporulação também foram classificadas no grupo de maior resistência aos sete dai. Entretanto, os coeficientes de correlação da análise estabelecida entre as médias de severidade das cultivares aos cinco e sete dai e as médias da taxa de esporulação de PoT não foram significativos (r=0,2464 e r=0,2047, respectivamente). Os resultados obtidos representam a caracterização atualizada da reação à brusone de cultivares de trigo do Brasil e constituem-se em importante marco exploratório da avaliação da reação de genótipos de trigo baseado na taxa de esporulação de PoT em seus tecidos.

ABSTRACT: The first report of wheat blast in the world was in Brazil, in 1986. Since then, a great effort has been made towards the development of wheat cultivars resistant to this disease, which is caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (PoT). The objective of this research was to (i) evaluate the resistance of wheat genotypes to blast and (ii) verify the correlation between disease severity on wheat spikes and sporulation rate of PoT on spike rachises. Plants of 40 cultivars grown in pots, at the flowering stage (stage 65 on the Zadoks scale), were inoculated with a suspension of conidia of a PoT isolate representative of the main variant of the fungus reported in Brazil. Severity of blast on the spikes at 5 and 7 days after inoculation (dai) and the rate of sporulation of the fungus on the rachis (conidia per g of rachis) were evaluated. Eighty percent of the cultivars that were classified in the group with the lowest sporulation rate were also classified in the group with the highest resistance at 7 dai. However, the correlation coefficients of the analysis established between the cultivar severity at 5 and 7 dai averages and the PoT sporulation rate averages were not significant (r=0.2464 and r=0.2047, respectively). Results obtained represent the updated characterization to blast of wheat cultivars in Brazil and constitute an important exploratory framework for the evaluation of the reaction of wheat genotypes based on the sporulation rate of PoT on their tissues.

Resumo Esta revisão apresenta o contexto atual da produção de trigo no Brasil, as estratégias de manejo para reduzir perdas de rendimento de grãos devido à brusone e as abordagens biotecnológicas para melhorar a resistência do trigo. A brusone do trigo é causada pelo fungo Magnaporthe oryzae patótipo Triticum (MoT) que pode infectar toda a parte aérea da planta. O principal sintoma da doença é o branqueamento das espigas que prejudica a produção de grãos, com perdas que podem chegar a 100% em cultivares suscetíveis. O primeiro relato mundial de brusone em espigas de trigo foi feito no Brasil, em 1985, e a doença atualmente é a principal restrição ao cultivo de trigo nas áreas tropicais e subtropicais dos biomas Cerrado e Mata Atlântica. Por muito tempo, o uso de fungicidas foi considerado ineficaz sob condições de alta pressão de doença. No entanto, trabalhos recentes apontam que a eficácia dos fungicidas depende da integração de outras medidas de controle, principalmente da escolha de cultivares com resistência moderada. Neste artigo de revisão, apresentam-se a alta variabilidade de reação do trigo ao MoT, bem como um painel de cultivares resistentes ou moderadamente resistentes (incluindo não portadoras da translocação 2NS), prontamente disponíveis para cultivo em regiões onde a brusone é endêmica.

Abstract This review paper presents the current context of wheat production in Brazil, the management strategies to reduce yield losses due to blast, and the biotechnological approaches to improve wheat resistance. Wheat blast or brusone is caused by the Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum (MoT) pathotype fungus that can infect all the aboveground parts of the plant. The main symptom of the blast disease is spike bleaching that impairs grain production, causing yield losses up to 100% in susceptible wheat cultivars. The first world report of blast in wheat spikes was in Brazil, in 1985, and, currently, the disease is the main constraint to wheat cultivation in tropical and subtropical areas of the Cerrado and Mata Atlântica biomes. For a long time, the use of fungicides has been found to be ineffective under high-pressure disease conditions. However, recent works have pointed out that fungicide efficiency depends on the integration of other control measures, particularly the choice of cultivars with moderate resistance. In this review paper, the high variability of wheat reaction to MoT is presented, as well as a panel of resistant or moderately resistant cultivars (including non-2NS carriers), promptly available for cultivation in regions where blast is endemic.

RESUMO: Sabe-se que a brusone do trigo ocorre preferencialmente em condições de temperaturas relativamente altas, porém muitos aspectos sobre a epidemiologia desta doença ainda permanecem desconhecidos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade esporulativa de Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (Pot) em tecidos de plantas de trigo sob diferentes temperaturas. Plantas de trigo do cultivar Anahuac 75, suscetível à brusone, foram inoculadas no estádio do florescimento com suspensões de conídios dos isolados Py 12.1.209 e Py 12.1.132 de Pot (105 conídios/mL). Sete dias após a inoculação, as plantas foram cortadas e separadas em três tipos de segmentos: colmos, folhas e ráquis (com severidade de brusone variando de 40 a 60%). Um grupo de cada desses três tipos de segmentos de planta contendo lesões foi disposto em câmara úmida. O material foi acondicionado em seis níveis de temperatura: 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 e 33 °C. O modelo mais apropriado que relacionou a produção de conídios com temperatura foi identificado nas avaliações feitas nas amostras de colmo. As equações estabelecidas permitiram identificar que a maior produção de conídios de Pot ocorreu entre as temperaturas de 24 e 27 °C.

ABSTRACT: Wheat blast is known for developing itself more intensely under relatively high temperature conditions but many aspects related to its epidemiology remain unknown. The objective of this research was to evaluate the sporulative capacity of Pyricularia oryzae Triticum (Pot), the causal agent of wheat blast, in tissues of wheat plants under different temperatures degrees. Wheat plants of the cultivar Anahuac 75, susceptible to blast, were inoculated in the stage of flowering with conidial suspensions (105 conidia/mL) of the Pot isolates Py 12.1.209 and Py 12.1.132. Seven days after the inoculation, plants were cut in the following segments: leaves, stems and rachis (with blast severity ranging from 40 to 60%). Groups of each one of the three plant segments with the lesions were disposed in Petri-dish moist chambers, that were submitted to six different temperature treatments (18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 °C). The most appropriate model that related the conidia production with temperature was identified in the evaluations conducted with stems. The established equations allowed identifying that the highest production of conidia of Pot occurs between 24 and 27 °C.

RESUMO O fungo Pyricularia sp. agente causal da brusone do trigo, produz conídios hialinos, secos e leves que podem ser removidos das lesões esporulativas pelo vento, e transportados a longas distâncias. Foram conduzidos experimentos com o objetivo de determinar (a) a relação entre variáveis meteorológicas e a quantidade de conídios de Pyricularia sp. no ar e (b) e obter dados técnicos que possam ser usados na elaboração de modelos de previsão de brusone. No período entre 2 de fevereiro de 2013 e 7 de junho de 2014, foi monitorado o número de conídios de Pyricularia sp. no ar, com o auxílio de armadilha coletora de esporos e lâminas de vidro untadas com vaselina. Neste período, foram registradas de hora em hora algumas variáveis climáticas, presentes durante a captura dos esporos. Os dados foram explorados através do uso de árvores de classificação, e relações entre preditores à base de variáveis climáticas e número de conídios capturados dia-1. Os preditores mais fortes foram umidade relativa do ar média, temperatura média diária, precipitação menor que 5 mm dia-1 e números de horas em que a temperatura estava entre 15 e 35 °C e umidade relativa do ar > 93%.

ABSTRACT The fungus Pyricularia sp., the causal agent of wheat blast, produces light, dry and hyaline conidia that can be removed from sporulating lesions by the wind and transported over long distances. Experiments were performed with the aim of (a) determining the relationship between the climate variables and the quantity of conidia of Pyricularia sp., and (b) obtaining technical data that can be used in the elaboration of blast forecasting models. From February 2nd, 2013 to June 7th, 2014, the number of Pyricularia sp. conidia in the air was monitored by using a spore trap and glass slides smeared with vaseline. Several climate variables were hourly recorded during the spore capturing period. The data were explored based on classification trees and relationships between the weather-based predictors and the number of trapped conidia day-1. The strongest predictors were mean relative humidity, daily mean temperature, precipitation lower than 5 mm day-1, and number of hours when temperature was between 15 and 35 °C and relative humidity > 93%.

ABSTRACT. Triazole fungicides have not been effective for managing the wheat blast disease in Brazil. A broad analysis across six geographical populations of Pyricularia graminis-tritici in central-southern Brazil indicated a high level of resistance to triazole fungicides. Since P. graminis-tritici is also associated with others poaceous species, here, we analyzed whether triazole-resistant isolates of the blast pathogen could be recovered from other poaceous hosts that are invasive of sprayed wheat fields. In addition to P. graminis-tritici (Pygt), we also evaluated the levels of sensitivity of three other grass-associated blast pathogens, which included P. grisea (Pg), P. pennisetigena (Pp), and P. urashimae (Pu). Resistance to the triazole fungicides tebuconazole and epoxiconazole was assessed phenotypically based on EC50 values and molecularly by analysis of the presence of mutations in the CYP51A gene, which encodes for the target enzyme 14-alpha-demethylase. We detected triazole-resistant Pyricularia spp. (Pg, Pp, Pu and Pygt) that is associated with Avena sativa, Cenchrus echinatus, Chloris distichophylla, Cynodon sp., Digitaria horizontalis, D. sanguinalis, Panicum maximum or Urochloa spp. The major outcome from our study was the evidence that invasive poaceous species from wheat fields could be an important source of triazole resistant fungal inoculum for the initial phases of the wheat blast epidemics.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar onze cultivares de aveia (Avena spp.) quanto à reação à brusone, causada pelo fungo Pyricularia oryzae Cav., sob condições controladas, a fim de identificar cultivares promissoras para uso em programas de melhoramento genético. Foram testadas cinco cultivares de Avena sativa, quatro cultivares de A. strigosa e duas cultivares de A. brevis. A reação foi testada em folhas, com quatro isolados de P. oryzae, na concentração de 2 x 10(5) conídios/mL. Quantificou-se número e expansão de lesões, severidade e área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença. As cultivares apresentaram variabilidade quanto à reação à inoculação. O melhor desempenho foi de A. sativa ‘URS Taura’, que mostrou os menores valores para número de lesões (2/folha), comprimento (5,42 mm) e largura (1,25 mm) de lesões, área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença (0,65) e severidade (6%). Nenhum genótipo foi resistente, mas quatro cultivares mostraram percentuais de severidade compatíveis com reação de ‘Moderada resistência’: A. sativa ‘URS Taura’ (6%), ‘UPFA Ouro’ (14%) e ‘IPR Afrodite’ (24%) e A. brevis ‘BRS Madrugada’ (24%). Esses genótipos são referências para uso como parentais nos programas de melhoramento de aveia.

The objective of this work was to evaluate eleven oat (Avena spp.) cultivars for the reaction to the blast caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae Cav., under controlled conditions, to identify promising cultivars for use in genetic breeding programs. Five cultivars of Avena sativa, four of A. strigosa and two of A. brevis were tested. The reaction was observed in leaves, with four isolates of P. oryzae, in the concentration of 2 x 10(5) conidia/ml. It was quantified the number and expansion of lesions, severity and area under the curve of disease progression. The cultivars presented variability regarding the reaction to inoculation. The best performance was A. sativa 'URS Taura', which showed the lowest values for number of lesions (2/leaf), length (5.42 mm) and width (1.25 mm) of lesions, area under the curve of disease progression (0.65) and severity (6%). No genotype was resistant, but four cultivars showed severity percentages compatible with 'Moderately resistance': A. sativa 'URS Taura' (6%), 'UPFA Ouro' (14%) and 'IPR Afrodite' and A. brevis 'BRS Madrugada' (24%). These genotypes are references for use as parents in oat breeding programs.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa propõe a utilização de um método baseado em leitor automatizado de microplacas para detectar resistência a fungicidas triazóis (IDM) e estrobirulinas (IQe) em populações do fungo hemibiotrófico fitopatogênico Pyricularia graminis-tritici (Pygt) do trigo. A disponibilidade de método acurado, mais rápido e eficiente para a detecção da redução da sensibilidade a fungicidas contribuiria para facilitar a tomada de decisão sobre o manejo químico da brusone do trigo no país. Há informação sobre redução da sensibilidade de triazóis no controle da brusone do trigo e evidências da ocorrência generalizada de redução da sensibilidade à estrobilurinas em populações do patógeno no Brasil. O método de microplaca foi acurado em discriminar a variação fenotípica na sensibilidade entre isolados do patógeno aos fungicidas IDM tebuconazol e epoxiconazol e ao fungicida IQe azoxistrobina. Economicamente, ambos os métodos representam alto custo, portanto, é necessário comparar a eficiência desses métodos. O método de microplacas foi mais eficiente no uso de recursos, com custo operacional total 33% inferior ao do método de placas de Petri. Em conjunto, os fatores acurácia, rapidez e eficiência no uso de recursos indicaram que o método de microplaca pode ser utilizado no monitoramento da resistência a fungicidas em populações do fungo da brusone do trigo no agroecossistema brasileiro.

ABSTRACT This study proposes the application of a method based on an automated microplate reader to detect resistance to triazole (DMI) and strobilurin (QoI) fungicides in populations of the plant pathogenic hemibiotrophic fungus Pyricularia graminis-tritici (Pygt) from wheat. Availability of an accurate, more rapid and efficient method to detect eventual reduction in sensitivity to fungicides could contribute to facilitate the decision making on chemical management of wheat blast in the country. There are reports of reduction in the sensitivity of triazoles to control wheat blast and evidence of widespread reduction in the sensitivity to strobilurins in populations of the pathogen in Brazil. The microplate method was accurate in discriminating the phenotypic variation in sensitivity among isolates of the pathogen to the DMI fungicides tebuconazole and epoxiconazole and to the QoI fungicide azoxystrobin. Economically, both methods represent high cost, therefore, the efficiency of these methods should be compared. The microplate method was more efficient in the use of resources, with a total operating cost 33% inferior to that of the Petri dish method. Together, the factors accuracy, celerity and efficiency in the use of resources indicated that the microplate method can be used to monitor resistance to fungicides among populations of the wheat blast fungus in the Brazilian agroecosystem.

RESUMO: A brusone, causada por Pyricularia oryzae, ameaça as culturas da aveia preta (Avena strigosa) e branca (A. sativa) no Brasil. Sabe-se pouco sobre a reação das cultivares brasileiras de aveia à brusone e se existe relação entre a resposta destas cultivares à doença nos estádios de plântula e de planta adulta. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: (a) verificar a reação de cultivares brasileiras de aveia à infecção de P. oryzae e; (b) se existe relação entre a resposta à brusone dessas cultivares nos estádios de plântula e de planta adulta. Plântulas e plantas adultas de 13 cultivares de aveia foram inoculadas com uma suspensão de conídios de um isolado de P. oryzae obtido de uma planta de uma cultivar de aveia preta. As cultivares foram classificadas de acordo com a estimativa visual da severidade da doença nas folhas das plântulas e nas panículas das plantas adultas. Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para cada um dos estádios avaliados. As cultivares com menor severidade de brusone nas plântulas foram a ‘Gaudéria UPFA’ (25,82%) e a ‘UPF 18’ (24,88%) e, nas panículas, foi a ‘BRS Centauro’ (31,63%). Os coeficientes de Pearson, Spearman e Kendall obtidos da análise de correlação entre os dois estádios avaliados foram -0,21232, -0,35714 e -0,30769, respectivamente (todos sem significância estatística à 0,05). A falta de correlação entre as respostas das cultivares de aveia à brusone, em plântulas e panículas, constitui-se em informação a ser considerada no manejo da doença, no campo e na geração de novas cultivares de aveia.

ABSTRACT: Blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae, threats black (Avena strigosa) and white (A. sativa) oats in Brazil. Little is known about the reaction of Brazilian oat cultivars to blast and if there is a relationship between the response of cultivars to the disease at seedling and adult plant stages. The goals of this research were to verify (a) the reaction of black and white Brazilian oat cultivars to infection of P. oryzae and (b) if the response to blast on seedling leaves and panicles was correlated. Seedlings and adult plants of 13 oat cultivars were inoculated with a conidial suspension of one P. oryzae isolate obtained from a black oat cultivar. The cultivars were classified according to blast severity on the leaf seedlings and panicles estimated by visual estimation. Two experiments were conducted for each one of the two evaluated stages. Cultivars with lower value to blast severity on seedling leaves were ‘UPFA Gaudéria’ (25.82%) and ‘UPF 18’ (24.88%) and, on panicles, ‘BRS Centauro’ (31.63%). Coefficients of Pearson, Spearman, and Kendall obtained from correlation analyses between blast severity on seedling leaves and panicles were -0.21232, -0.35714, and -0.30769, respectively (non-significant at 0.05). Lack of correlation between the responses of these oat cultivars to blast on seedling leaves and panicles be considered in the management of the disease in the field and the generation of new oat cultivars.

Abstract The wheat cultivar ‘BRS 331’ was developed by Embrapa. It results from an interspecific cross between wheat and maize by double-hapolid method. ‘BRS 331’ shows solid stem in the base of the plant, short leaves and super-early cycle to maturity. It is classified as bread wheat in all of the regions that is recommended in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina, Brazil.

RESUMO Espécies de fungos do gênero Pyricularia estão associadas com a doença brusone, em plantas da família Poaceae, causando perdas em culturas de importância econômica como arroz, aveia, centeio, cevada, trigo e triticale. Objetivou-se caracterizar o espectro de patogenicidade de P. pennisetigena e P. zingibericola em braquiária, cevada e trigo, bem como compará-los com os das espécies P. grisea e P. oryzae patótipo Triticum, de ocorrência generalizada no agroecossistema brasileiro. Foram testados 20 isolados de Pyricularia spp. obtidos de amostras de folhas infectadas de plantas invasoras de campos de trigo. A classificação dos isolados em espécies distintas de Pyricularia foi efetuada utilizando-se filogenia molecular baseada nos genes actina e calmodulina. Pyricularia pennisetigena e P. zingibericola inoculados em folhas, à concentração ajustada para 105 conídios mL-1, foram patogênicos a braquiária, cevada e trigo, com índices variáveis de agressividade.

ABSTRACT Fungal species from the Pyricularia genus are associated with blast disease in plants from the Poaceae family, causing losses in economically important crops such as rice, oat, rye, barley, wheat and triticale. This study aimed at characterizing the pathogenicity spectrum of P. pennisetigena and P. zingibericola to signal grass, barley and wheat, as well as comparing them with those from the species P. grisea and P. oryzae pathotype Triticum, which occur widely in the Brazilian agroecosystem. Twenty isolates of Pyricularia spp. were obtained from infected leaf samples of invasive plant species from wheat fields. The isolates classification into distinct Pyricularia species was done using molecular phylogeny based on actin and calmodulin genes. Pyricularia pennisetigena and P. zingibericola inoculated on plant leaves, at a concentration adjusted to 105 conidia mL-1, were pathogenic to signal grass, barley and wheat, with varying levels of aggressiveness.
